National Organization for Women Sample Call Scripts – Reproductive Rights 2021

Calling our congressional representatives is one of the hallmarks of grassroots activism and a proven strategy. When you call, be brief, respectful, and stick to a single topic. Make sure you only call your state and local representatives. Here are step-by-step instructions
CALL YOUR CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVES: Call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and be connected to your local Representative’s or Senator's office. Here is a directory of current members of Congress and a directory of current Senators.
CALL YOUR STATE LEGISLATORS: Here is a state legislator directory to help find an appropriate contact in your state. Florida state directory.

Here are some sample scripts to get you started. Use them as a foundation for your thoughts, but remember to be brief and to the point. You can also use these scripts to get you started with your
emails.
For Congressional Representatives: I am a constituent of [REP. OR SEN.] _________ and I am calling to urge HIM OR HER to vote IN FAVOR OF/AGAINST [NAME] LEGISLATION. This is a critical step needed to codify the right to abortion care and reproductive freedom. We must stop abortion restrictions that disproportionately harm those who already face barriers to accessing health care, including women of color, low wage earners, LGBTQIA+ people, people with disabilities. Many of your constituents join the majority of Americans who support reproductive rights. Stand up for the women of STATE and vote IN FAVOR OF/AGAINST LEGISLATION.
For
State Legislators: I am contacting [LEGISLATOR’S NAME] because we must take action in [STATE] to defend critical access to abortion care. We must put new protections in place that will hold the line on future attacks and repeal dangerous restrictions that already threaten our reproductive freedom. That is why I am URGING AGAINST/SUPPORTING [NAME] LEGISLATION and I urge [LEGISLATOR’S NAME] to do the same.

Your Voice and Your Vote are Powerful Tools!
Take a few minutes to read what is going on and take appropriate action to make a difference!

The national bill H.R.3755, the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2021 (WHPA) was passed in the House on September 24.  It is now headed to the Senate where it will face a challenge for support.

The WHPA would prevent abortion bans and restrictions, placing protection for abortion in Federal law. Currently, a majority of Supreme Court members do not represent the pro-choice majority in our nation. Our reproductive rights are at risk.  Find your Congressperson’s contact information at the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 or go to: house.gov.

*   SCRIPT: “My name is ______________ and I am calling to express my support for HR 3755, the Women’s Health Protection Act. This legislation would protect women’s access to reproductive health care and protect our constitutional right to abortion.”

Contact your Senator and urge her/him to support this bill.

 Proposed Florida Abortion Ban

A Texas style 6-week abortion ban - HB 167 - was filed on 9/22 in the Florida House of Representatives by Representative Webster Barnaby (HD-27).  Rep. Barnaby has filed anti-abortion legislation in the past and is supported by anti-abortion & anti-LGBTQ+ groups. At first glance, the bill is nearly identical to Texas with no exceptions for rape or incest. It incentivizes others to report abortions, a chilling twist in the anti-abortion arsenal. Here is what you can do to protect reproductive rights.

1 - Call the sponsor of the bill, Representative Barnaby

Capitol Office: 850-717-5027;  District Office: 386-851-0799

* SCRIPT: “My name is ______ and I am calling to express my opposition to HB 167, Rep. Barnaby’s extreme abortion ban. I am calling to ask him to focus on important issues facing our state, and not on banning abortion. A majority of Floridians support Roe v. Wade and we will not tolerate this unconstitutional attack on our freedoms.

2 - Call your State Representative.

To find out who your state Representative is and their contact information go to: myfloridahouse.gov

* SCRIPT: “My name is ______ and I am calling to express my opposition to HB 167, Rep. Barnaby’s extreme abortion ban. I am calling to ask my Representative to focus on important issues facing our state instead of banning abortion. A majority of Floridians support Roe v. Wade and we will not tolerate this unconstitutional attack on our freedoms.”
