TAKE ACTION NOW-STOP FLORIDA SENATE BILL 410

SB 410 would require school districts or specified schools to notify and request the written consent of parents before the teaching of reproductive health or any sexually transmitted disease.

Read SB 410 here-

“The scientific evidence – not to mention common sense – shows that comprehensive sex education helps young people withstand pressures and promotes healthy, responsible and mutually protective relationships. But a dangerous new legislative proposal (Senate Bill 410) would create an additional barrier to giving young people the access to education they need and decrease the number of young people in Florida receiving sex ed at a critical point in their lives.

Contact the bill sponsor, Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez (R-Doral) today. Urge her to immediately withdraw this unnecessary proposal that will make it harder for young Floridians to learn about safe sex.

Florida already has uneven access to sex education. Counties with large metropolitan areas, like Miami-Dade and Hillsborough, tend to have better standards that promote comprehensive sexual health education, while students in more rural areas are sometimes left with abstinence only education. Senator Rodriguez's new bill, SB 410, would cause even greater divides in access to sex education.

Providing teens and young people with the information they need to make responsible decisions about their sexual health is extremely popular with everyone from parents to public health experts because it reduces unintended teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. We all want to keep children safe but research clearly shows that stigmatizing and limiting access to sex education will have the opposite effect. It is imperative for the health of our young people that we provide our students with comprehensive, medically accurate and age-appropriate information.”

HB 1 :Combating Public Disorder is on the Wednesday, January 27, meeting agenda of the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Subcommittee.

I urge you to vote NO on this bill sponsored by Fernandez-Barquin. The bill enacts heavy-handed punishments designed to curb free speech and silence dissent. Additionally the bill preempt s municipalities from funding initiatives to maintain law and order with social workers trained in substance abuse, domestic violence, mental health and homelessness.

TAKE ACTION NOW-Stop the abortion ban in Florida! SB 744/HB 351

From Florida Alliance of Planned Parenthood

A new extreme abortion ban was filed last week on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. SB 744/HB 351 is a cruel attempt to ban abortion in the state of Florida past 20 weeks.

Every pregnancy is different. There are many reasons a person may need to access abortion later in pregnancy. These are deeply personal decisions and sometimes heartbreaking. A person needs all their medical options.

It is crucial for pregnant people to have the opportunity to consider all their options based on their unique situation and for doctors to be able to treat their patients without interference. These medical decisions should be made by pregnant people and their families, in consultation with their doctor — access to health care should not be held up by political agendas.

Attempts to ban abortion are always wrong, but an attempt to do so in the middle of a pandemic, is appalling. Senator Diaz, as chair of the Health Policy committee, should be focusing on urgent issues like Coronavirus vaccine distribution, not on blocking access to care.

Click here to email Senator Manny Diaz and tell him NOT to hear the abortion ban.

We don’t need ideological grand standing, we don’t need bans on health care, and we don’t need to add further harm to women who are already facing tragedy.

What we need, is effective politicians from all sides of the aisle who are willing to work to help struggling Floridians during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Help us stop this bill. It only takes a moment.

In solidarity,

Laura Goodhue, Executive Director
